As a Warehouse NUbie, you help run the daily warehouse operations and prepare orders for our online customers.

Tasks include:

  • Product handling
    • Receive and check deliveries and put products in their right storage location
    • Pack products in jars and paper bags
    • Assemble customer orders with care and in a timely fashion
    • Monitor product quality and freshness and ensure proper rotation of product
    • Complete temperature logs
  • Warehouse maintenance
    • Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of all areas of the warehouse, including the office space
    • Sanitize utensils, containers, bins, dispensers and work surfaces in accordance with health and safety procedures
    • Complete cleaning logs
    • Separate waste and dispose of garbage, compost and recycling properly

Desired Work Experiences: A prior experience in a warehouse setting or in food retail especially bulk is a plus

Start date: End of February

Location: NU Warehouse at 250 City Centre Ave.

Availability: We offer both full time and part time positions

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage: $14.25 an hour, increased to $15 an hour at the end of the 3 month probationary period.

Store Manager

As a Store Manager, you organize and oversee the daily operations of the store, and make sure that it runs smoothly and effectively.

Tasks include:

  • Procurement and administration
    • Prepare weekly product inventory and sales reports and place orders in a timely and accurate manner to minimize out of stock or overstocked products
    • Ensure deliveries are received properly and products are stored in their appropriate storage location
    • Communicate with suppliers to address discrepancies or quality issues and request credits
    • Verify invoices, enter quantities and costs in NU’s inventory system
    • Keep inventory numbers up to date by conducting regular spot checks and overseeing the store’s annual physical inventory count
    • Handle cash and cash deposits
    • Collaborate with the store manager of our other location and NU’s director of procurement on common procurement projects
  • Management
    • Perform opening and closing tasks
    • Delegate and assign daily tasks to store staff
    • Provide training and ongoing guidance to staff, including timely feedback and support
    • Motivate staff, ensure good morale and high performance
  • Customer service
    • Provide a smooth customer experience: ensure that shelves and bins are well stocked, product and price labels are properly displayed, carts and utensils are available to customers at all times, etc.
    • Ensure a consistent and high level of customer service: interact with and advise customers on our products, the zero waste lifestyle and zero waste shopping, answer questions and offer solutions
    • Fulfil customers’ requests and special orders
    • Mitigate and resolve customer concerns and complaints
  • Health, food safety, work safety
    • Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of the entire store
    • Provide a safe and clean environment in compliance with laws, regulations and internal procedures
    • Ensure that health, food and work safety rules are enforced by every team member
  • Product quality and waste prevention
    • Monitor expiry dates and product freshness to ensure consistent product quality
    • Take preventive steps to avoid food waste

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Genuine friendliness, enthusiasm and proven leadership skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to “read” customers and establish a great rapport with them
  • Strong proficiency with spreadsheets, understanding of sales margins, ability to analyze sales reports and inventory numbers
  • Ability to analyze sales trends, performance of individual products and propose specials and discounts
  • Ability to organize staff, delegate tasks and follow up on their completion
  • Excellent work ethics and team spirit
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to work 8-hour shifts, standing and walking 6-8 hours, wearing a mask at all times
  • Passion for environment, knowledge about sustainability, interest in the zero waste movement and willingness to learn
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kg but also handle sensitive products and equipment with care

Desired Work Experiences

  • A prior 2 - 3 year management experience in food retail (bulk food management is a plus)
  • Food Handler’s Certificate

Start date: Immediate start

Location: Positions are available at all locations, NU Wellington at 1130 Wellington Street West (Hintonburg), NU Main at 143 Main Street (Old Ottawa East)

Availability: Full time (32 hours a week)

Compensation:

  • Salary range: $40,000 to $50,000 starting salary depending on background and experience
  • 10% NUbie discount on store products
  • 2 weeks paid accrued vacation and opportunity for additional unpaid time off
  • Health benefits: Paid sick days and health benefits are offered to full time employees at the end of the probationary period.
  • Paid mental health day during the COVID-19 pandemic: We recognize the additional strain that the pandemic has put on our staff. For this reason, full time employees currently receive one paid mental health day every week as soon as their training is completed and they start working full shifts (a 4-day work week at a full salary).
