This posting is a part of the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program which requires you to meet the following criteria:

  • you are between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • you are a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; 
  • you are legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations;
  • you will work a minimum of 30 hours per week for a period of 6 to 16 weeks.

As a NUbie, you help run the store and are the first point of contact for our customers.

Tasks include:

  • Customer service
  • Greet and assist our customers
  • Answer questions about the store, our products, zero waste shopping and the zero waste lifestyle
  • Perform all cash register functions at the checkout
  • Product handling
  • Receive and check deliveries, put products in their right storage location
  • Fill bins and dispensers with products
  • Ensure that store shelves are fully stocked with products
  • Maintain attractive product displays
  • Monitor product quality and freshness and ensure proper rotation of product
  • Ensure visibility of product information and price labels
  • Complete temperature logs
  • Store maintenance
  • Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of all areas of the store
  • Sanitize utensils, bins, dispensers and work surfaces in accordance with health and safety procedures
  • Complete cleaning logs
  • Separate waste and dispose of garbage

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Genuine friendliness, enthusiasm and excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to “read” customers and establish a great relationship with them
  • Ability to adapt and work across different areas
  • Excellent work ethics and team spirit
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to work 8-hour shifts, standing and walking 6-8 hours, wearing a mask at all times
  • Passion for environment, knowledge about sustainability, interest in zero waste movement and willingness to learn
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kg but also handle sensitive products and equipment with care

Desired Work Experiences: A prior experience in food retail, especially bulk, is a plus.

Availability: This position is a full-time position (min 30 hours per week)

Product Photography and Website Development Intern

As a Product Photography & Website Development Intern, you are in charge of updating our product pictures and helping revamp our website and online store with the goal to boost brand awareness and sales. 

Tasks include:

Product photography

  • Create high quality product pictures for our online store and social media
  • Shoot and edit photos and videos intended for campaigns, print, website and social media use
  • Create a photography guideline manual in collaboration with leadership team

Website Updates

  • Create high quality visual and written content consistent with NU’s tone and brand identity
  • Develop, maintain and update website content and product information
  • Evaluate, manage and boost website performance

Education

  • Diploma or undergraduate degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Marketing or a related field is preferred
  • Students in similar fields looking for internships and summer jobs are welcome to apply
  • Candidates with no prior formal education but with a portfolio will be considered as well

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Genuine friendliness, enthusiasm and creativity
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (fluency in French is a bonus) and good email etiquette
  • Strong photography, video and design skills
  • Strong experience with camera fundamentals
  • Strong technical proficiency and experience with design and photo processing softwares, and ability to constantly update skills and keep up with the fast-evolving digital world
  • Ability to prioritize, project manage and function within deadlines while working both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with key social media platforms, website metrics and their analytical tools, and up-to-date knowledge of trends in SEO content marketing
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Mobility and ability to work at both stores and the warehouse and organize photoshoots at various locations
  • Excellent work ethics and team spirit

What we are looking for

  • A prior experience in product photography, website creation, social media management, content creation, communications and digital marketing
  • Proven track record and portfolio

You will stand out with 

  • Fluency in both official languages (French & English)
  • Passion for zero waste and sustainable products

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage: $15 an hour

  • Mental health benefit: We recognize the additional strain that the pandemic has put on our staff. For this reason, full time employees receive 1 paid mental health day every week as soon as their probationary period of 3 months is completed and they start working full shifts (work 4 days a week and get paid for 5).
  • Health benefits: Paid sick days and health benefits are offered to full time employees at the end of the probationary period.

As a Warehouse NUbie, you help run the daily warehouse operations and prepare orders for our online customers.

Tasks include:

  • Product handling
    • Receive and check deliveries and put products in their right storage location
    • Pack products in jars and paper bags
    • Assemble customer orders with care and in a timely fashion
    • Monitor product quality and freshness and ensure proper rotation of product
    • Complete temperature logs
  • Warehouse maintenance
    • Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of all areas of the warehouse, including the office space
    • Sanitize utensils, containers, bins, dispensers and work surfaces in accordance with health and safety procedures
    • Complete cleaning logs
    • Separate waste and dispose of garbage, compost and recycling properly
